Despite the sad events of the day, the visitors attending the show appeared to be well up to the usual numbers. Perhaps they were slower to come but they did come, and in strength. The organisers had done their best to make it a great day out and, and everyone seemed to respond by joining in and making it an occasion to remember. Although some events were cancelled out of respect for Princess Diana's funeral, there was still a lot to do, see and enjoy. |
| Some of the proceeds from the show are going towards the New
Memorial Hall Fund and the Trust laid on a display of plans and materials to give everyone
a good idea of what the finished building will look like. Members of the Trust committee were on hand and they tirelessly described the plans to anyone who showed an interest. And that was many of the people at the show. |

Among the attractions that caught the imagination of the children - and the child in each adult - was the model steam engine, which gave rides up and down a small length of track. The tiny engine had no trouble in pulling large numbers of children and adults along the line throughout the afternoon. |
| Hundreds of balloons were released in the hope that they would travel to France and Germany, and beyond, and win a prize for the lucky contestant. Or, perhaps more realistically, they just took part for the fun of seeing a multitude coloured of balloons soaring skywards. | ![]() |

In the arena visitors to the show were entertained by the Black and Gold Marching Band, with a display of synchronised marching and playing. The public address told the spectators that the band was busy at shows on most weekends throughout the year. They had been to so many events that the band's organiser could not remember exactly how many performances they had done this year! |

| There were flower and vegetable displays in abundance in the marquee. The
competing gardeners must have worked very hard to produce such remarkable results. To get
three matching onions for display, one enthusiast had to dig up 168 from his plot! There was baking, wine making, preserves, handicrafts, photography and art on display in the marquee too. It proves that the many people prefer not just to sit in front of the TV in their leisure time. |

| The craft tent had a wide range of items for sale as well as the
Winchester Photographic Club display at one end. Wood carving, wool spinning and all kinds of ornaments were on display and many of the stall holders were keen to discuss their craft with the visitors - even when a sale was unlikely. |

Winchester County Museum Services lent one of their restored lorries - as bright and well kept as the day it was made - carrying two remarkable marine engines on the back. |
| Although the Musuem Services exhibit was not for sale, several dealers had set up their stalls to sell parts for old motorbikes and cars. | ![]() |
| You could test you football skills against a very agile young goalkeeper - - or buy a best seller from the ever-popular book stall. | ![]() |

During the afternoon many visitors revived their spirits with a drink in
the beer tent or the more abstemious visited the WI tea stall. The hot dog stand also
proved to be as popular as ever. At the end of the day, it was time to hand out the prizes - a small reward for all the hard work the winners had put into their exhibits. But I'm sure that everyone who visited the show would like to thank all the competition entrants - not just the winners - and the stall and show organisers, for making this such an enjoyable day out. |
