Littleton & Harestock Show, 2005

Saturday, 3 September

The Littleton Show was up to its normal high standards again - as was the weather. The marvellous September weather encouraged a record number of people to pass through the gates.

Also because of the glorious sunshine, the ice-cream van did an excellent trade and the Post Office sold out of ice-cream altogether.

The varied number of stall holders included the Cats' Protection League and many other well-known societies and charities. The Show's own bookstall was very popular too - selling books by the box load towards the end.

In the Show Tent there was the usual fine display of vegetables, some unusually shaped, but all lovingly grown by local enthusiasts. Many lovely flower arrangements, cookery and crafts were also displayed. One impressive entry depicted "The Last Supper” knitted in wool!

There were themed displays, like this one on the topic of Australia.

Outside around the arena there were displays of cars, motorcycles and a traction engine that offered rides around the arena.

This mechanical organ entertained us by playing from its large repertoire of merry tunes whilst the chef from the Running Horse carried out cooking demonstrations.
The Wheel of Fortune was kept busy, with many folk having more than one go to win a prize.
There was something for everyone, including a death-defying aerobatic display by Paul Ambrose. He carried out many stomach churning stunts for all to enjoy.
The variety and quality of the goods for sale was very high...
...and the Balloon Race and hot-dog stand both had long queues throughout the day.

Lots of people tried their luck on the Tombola bottle raffle and others jostled to get a bargain plant from the Gardening Club stall.

This year, for the first time at the Show, the L’Estrange Companye Medieval Re-enactors thrilled us with mock medieval fighting. They certainly earned their applause - they must have been sweltering in their hot armour.
It was such a lovely day - it must have been one of the warmest days yet - that people some people and animals had unique ways of staying cool.

Others just enjoyed relaxing and watching the performances, including the one by the Eastleigh Senators Junior Band...

...while some enjoyed the display of vintage motorcycles
All good things must come to an end and, as usual, this was signalled by the presentation of the trophies. These were awarded to many winners of the Show competitions by the Committee Chairman, who this year was Mike Lupton.

I suppose you can say that we all had a smashing time - like this lad on the crockery stall!
