After a wet start, the day of the Littleton & Harestock Show
was fine and sunny. Large
crowds assembled at the recreation ground in Littleton to support the fundraising efforts of this popular local
show.
For the first time, the BBC Radio Solent programme "Topsoil" was recorded at the show and visitors was able to put their gardening questions to a panel of experts. |

| There seemed to be a record number of stalls this year selling everything from garden plants to preserves and books or just asking you to gamble on a bottle - all for charity, of course. | The largest book stall was kept in the Memorial Hall because of problems with rain in previous years. Fortunately, it was am unnecessary precaution this year. Also on display in the Hall was the evolving Littleton Village Design Statement. |

There was a wide variety of goods for sale
in the Craft Tent area of the main marquee. Cards, paintings, wooden
bowls, stuffed toys and woolen garments were all lovingly crafted by the
stall holders - many of which had a tale to tell about the items they were
selling.
It's a very personal way of shopping and at prices that are a fraction of those in the high street stores. The Winchester Photographic Society were also their to display their members' work and encourage others to join. |
| Visitors were entertained in the main arena by the Solent Dog Display Team and the knock out rounds of the Junior Football teams | .![]() |

| Or you could try your luck at the coconut shy, the hoopla stall and miniature golf. All proved to be very popular, especially with the younger visitors. | If these pursuits were not active enough for you, there was an obstacle course set up by the army. Although, while I was there, most people seem to be standing around thinking about it rather than doing it! |

As always, the model railway, run by the Winchester Model Railway Society, was popular with all ages. The appeal of steam - even if it's in miniature - seems to be universal. |

| The flowers and vegetables in the Main Show Tent reached an exceptional standard, considering the vagaries of the weather this year. | And the home crafts clearly showed that not everyone sits at home and watches TV in their spare time! |

| If all that exercise and excitement was too much, you could relax with a hot dog and a pint of beer... | ...and watch the start of the balloon race. |

| The final act was to award the well deserved trophies to the class winners but there was a note of sadness in the address given by the Show Chairman. It seems that volunteers to organise the Show are becoming a rarity. Unless more people come forward, this could be the last show run at Littleton. Let's hope not! | If you would like to help organise next years show, please contact Richard Sydenham on 882860 - no previous experience is necessary. |
