I have been browsing through the entries and have recognised several names,
I lived on HMS Flowerdown from 1948 until I married in 1965, with a period
away in Malta for 4 years. I lived across the Green.  I think I must have
been very lucky to live there, loads of things to do and lots of friends to
play with.  Children were catered for very well with parties, trips and of
course the fameous shows that were put on in the Clubhouse, although we made
our own entertainment and mischief. I went to Sparsholt School  with many of
the people who have made entries in the Guest Book.

I have not moved very far from Winchester and now spend my retirement years
in Basingstoke. I look back with very fond memories of my life on Flowerdown
and the children and adults that made life so interesting.

I have just found your site and am impressed.I moved to Harestock estate in Jan 63 and went to the Peter Symonds School.I did a paper round for a newsagent in the middle of Littleton village. The round was Littleton Harestock lane and the estate.Used to go to the youth club in the village. The only family name I remember was Shawyer who lived on the Flowerdown estate.I moved away in 1965 at the age of 16.My next contact was in 1973 when I married Elizabeth Hamilton who lived on the Lainston Estate. We were married in Sparsholt Church and had the reception in the Civil Service club on Flowerdown.
We now live in Devon and I am in the Royal Navy.I would be happy to contact anyone who remembers me.

“I was brought up in Littleton, and lived there between 1948 until around 1957, at, what was then "The Firs", 56 Main Road. It was a wooden bungalow dating from the late 1800s, and was moved from the Hursley estate, now owned by IBM, and re-erected in Littleton. I believe my step-father, Mr Matthews bought the property and the bungalow in the early 1900s. My mother, Mrs Matthews, lived there until 1979 when it was badly damaged by a tree that fell across the house making it uninhabitable. The property was then sold and the remains of the bungalow burned down by the developer who bought the property, and two brick houses were built on the site. In the old garden, that backed onto the recreation ground, was a walnut tree, a chestnut tree, and a number of plum trees and apple trees and of course numerous firs trees. I am still in touch with Mr & Mrs Mariner, of "Chakarata", who used to run the pub, "The Running Horse", at one time. Your web site is very good and it is wonderful to find such a small village as Littleton with it's own website. I would be interested to see information on the Littleton Stables, which used to be owned by the Dean family. I worked there for a year after leaving school. I think it was about 1951/52.”

Some villagers remember hearing that Mrs Matthews “flew with Amy Johnson” John does not think this story is based on fact but, he says, he may be wrong as she certainly did go flying near Plymouth, in the early 1920s where she used to go with John’s father, Frank Briggs, who was doing experiments with shortwave radio a very new thing at the time!

John is now happily living in Hong Kong and has sent us a picture of his view

A wonderful site congratulations!
My family came descended from Robert Fifield who owned the White house in Littleton. Robert Fifield is in fact my GGGG Grandfather and my G Grandfather Richard Fifield Lamport often visited Littleton researching the family history. I have in my possession copies of the letters he wrote to Rev Tanner regarding the tomb stone of Temperance Fifield. These copies were kindly given to me by Glen Fifield, Utah, USA, who on a visit to Littleton was given these by the then deceased Rev Tanner's daughter. I would be very interested in corresponding with anyone who is also researching the Fifield / Hayter family.

I was interested to read about frog life in local ponds. I too had masses of frogspawn in my pond, but within about a week (mid to late March) it all disappeared very rapidly and not, as far as I can see, into tadpoles. Can anyone tell me what eats frogspawn in large quantities?

Love it, I am looking for info on a small plane crash somewhere around Littleton/Harestock in the 50's I think, anyone remember, please email me. I lived in Sparsholt 1945 till 1980 when I came to live in California, but I remember the first and last names in the guest book, well Pete's sister, Anne Reeman better than Pete and Robin Brierley used to beat on me regularly. We changed school busses every day at Eve's Store and I well recall the day outside there on Feb 4th 1959 when we heard that Buddy Holly died in a plane crash, Colin Grant and I were big fans, strange since I now live about a mile from where Richie Valens lived (died with him) - The day the music died!.
Pity about the Runner, yes, my dad bought that too!

My family lived in Flowerdown and Littleton (North Drive Caravan Park) from 1949 until the mid 1970's apart from 3 years in Malta 1955 - 58 and I recognise several names from previous Guest Book contributors.
I recently visited the 'Runner' which went rapidly downhill in the late 80's and 90's after Don and Barbara left. I wouldn't call it a traditional village local any more and you won't find a dart board there now either!! They do have some nice old photo's on the wall though, including one of the tractor and trailer procession going up the main road on Coronation Day 1953. I was on the trailer somewhere. A shame not to find any information on this site about the Water Pumping station run by Dick Monks for years.
I will always remember when Mrs Edwards (Eve's Stores) gave me a box of Maltesers on my 7th birthday.
I did have one last contact with the village when I helped train Wendy when she and Pete first took over the Post Office. Happy days.

In reply to Steve Kinrade's message, Three Maids Hill is called so because it is to be said that 3 maids were murdered upon that road by a farmer (hope thats helped you)
I've really come on here to leave a message about that disgusting house that is being built opposite the old raceing stables. How can something so modern be built in such an old part of the village. Sure enough, that bungalow that was there before was modern, but it fitted in because it was small, but that new house makes that part of the village look very ugly and i dont see how that managed to get planning permission! I drive by that house to go to work everyday and it is the first thing that i notce and looks totally out of place and has ruined the look! The people who are havin it built should of been content with the former building or should of had that house built in the 'newer' part of the village!!

I lived in littleton around 1943 or so and went to school in Crawley. My dad worked at HMS Flowerdown in these war days we but returned in 1948. my main memories are of idilic days as a child (9 years old) in the war of the Americans who treated us well, mainly I think because of our rather nice headmistress Miss Crosby. I lived in Littleton at the bottom of the hill in a cottage called Villa Garcia owned by a Mr Mariner. We "played" in a field at the top of the hill by Flowerdown where there was what I now think was a prehistoric Mound but was to us just a place to play. Sadly a couple of my school mates were killed by a grenade we 'found' , Pete Guppy and John Greaves if my memory serves me well. Later in 1950 I worked at Moor Farm in Sparsholt before joining the RAF as an apprentice, but my memories of Littleton are happy ones , and my parents are left in the churchyard in Kingsworthy. My Dad always said he should have owned the Running Horse with all the money he spent in there!.

Hello, I am in Massacusetts, USA.
I am the Artistic Director of a world-music vocal ensemble called The Halalisa Singers. We are singing "Everyone Suddenly Burst Out Singing," which uses the poem by Sigfried Sassoon, set to music by Peter Willsher in the '90s as a salute to a friend’s struggle with and death from Hodgkin’s disease. We have been researching the intent Sassoon might have had to write the poem during WWI, and came upon your site.
The sculpture outside your parish is exquisite. It warms my heart during these troubled times to see people in separate parts of the world using the same poem from so long ago, it is so hopeful. I am also a music director for a Unitarian Universalist church, btw, and board member for the UU musicians' network.
If it is possible to get a larger jpeg or similar image of the sculpture, I would love to share this synchronicity with our audiences.

Many thanks,
Jeannie Gagné

Very informative site (even if a little out of date in places), I had a very enjoyable 2 hours reading and am tempted to offer my services in some way - though I have yet to decide how.

My areas of expertise are computing, meteorology, geology and natural history and I would gladly share my knowledge with anyone with any similar intersts. I currently have little local knowledge in these areas, but am learning on a daily basis. Although new to the area, I may well be settling here, especially as my wife has now been appointed as the new assistant manager of the One Stop store on Priors Dean Road. I am keen to get involved with any local conservation activities and would be happy to receive any requests for assistance in such matters.

Keep up the good work!

Regards, Dave

I lived with my family in Littleton from 1935 to 1941.My father was a Royal Naval Lt. i/c at the Flowerdown station. We lived in the house named Glendale just behind Eve´s Store.
I moved into Winchester during the war but continued to work at Flowerdown where I met my husband. After the war I lived in Ceylon(Sri Lanka) with my husband and two children for six years but returned to Flowerdown in 1956.At that time we lived inHookpit and Crawley, before emigrating to Canada.
I would be very interested in hearing from anyone in Littleton who remembers the occupants of Glendale!

I found your website whilst I have been researching my family tree, and have found it very useful. My grandfather was Alphonsus Long who was landlord of 'The Running Horse' from 1926-1936. It was nice to see his name in print. I understand the pub was taken over from his mother Rosina and I wonder if there is anyone who could give me any more information about the 'Long' family during their time in Littleton. I have sent the postcard of the above to my Aunt who was born there in 1930. I live in a small village near Fareham and it's nice to see that other villages still have the same community spirit. I found the website very informative and interesting.

Can anyone advise me how to find out how Three Maids Hill got its name? I think I read somewhere that three young women were executed at that spot. I would like to learn more about the circumstances surrounding that event.
In the book called 'Hampshire Place-names' it is recorded that the name 'Harestock' has its roots in the Anglo-Saxon for 'head stake' - the implication being that severed heads were displayed in the vicinity in the distant past. Can anyone confirm this or suggest how I can find out more? Sorry to draw attention to aspects of the district's less attractive history.

The site is first class - one to be proud of, and easy for the partially sighted to use. Could the stud details be up-dated by them - would be interesting. I agree with Claire O - we at the north end are still proud to be part of the village, and the precious bridleway passed Drovers Way is a lovely walk to take. Found it almost impossible to find anything to add in the competition

I have lived in ~~~~~~~~~ since Dec 91 and think it's great. The website is most impressive. I had no idea how many groups and clubs etc exist in such a small place! I went to the show at the weekend and hope it was a success for all involved, I did enjoy it. I have concerns over changes in the village mainly over building and floodlighting/streetlighting. We have a fantastic environment and should try to keep it that way. Perhaps we can if we all work together.

the website is good but where is littleton farm?? which is located in the parish of littleton, and also what about the walk from Drovers way which leads into the village of Crawley? we may be located on the outskirts of the Littleton but we do participate in village activites such as the Littleton and Harestock show. We also visit Littleton Civil Service Club. Just because we live on the outskirts of the Village, we dont like to be totally ignored!! i hope this all makes sense and i apolagise for making a fuss but there is life on the outskirts

Very Informative Web Site, as we live in Fort Saskatchewan Alberta, Canada. We like to keep in touch with our "Old Country Routes" and web sites like yours make it easy to slip back thoughts of Autum days in the new forest, pints of DD after cricket games on Rickmansworth Village Green, and Long Summer Days.
I happened onto your site while doing a name search hence you also have a "Mike Lecomber" in Littleton there are not many "lecombers ", around so to find one is great, Please pass on my e mail address and if possible he may contact me.
Please Cheak out Fort Saskatchewan's Web Page.

I grew up in Littleton, my parents are Michael and Shirley Lupton. I now live in Sydney Australia and I love catching up with what's going on in the village via the web site. The progress page on the New Hall and the special events like the Opening and the Show are great fun to browse over and imagining it all very vividly. Thanks.

We have just come home from a truly memorable event this afternoon - the Official Openeing of the new Millennium Littleton & Harestock Memorial Hall. Everyone enjoyed the event and the link between the military and the community which marked the original Memorial Hall was conducted with dignity and celebration.
